Mary (Jeanne) Murphy Adonizio


Mary (Jeanne) Murphy Adonizio, 91, formerly of Hughestown, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2016 in Wesley Village, Pittston.

Born in the Junction section of Pittston on October 21, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Laura Boshart Murphy.

She was a graduate of Pittston High School, class of 1942; King’s County Hospital School of Nursing, Brooklyn, NY, class of 1945. She held her Registered Nursing License in New York and Pennsylvania. She was employed at King’s County Hospital and returned to PA in 1951. She obtained a certificate in OB Nursing and Nurse Management from Wilkes College. She was employed for 35 years at Hahnemann Hospital in Scranton which later became CMC where she was a staff nurse and head nurse in labor and delivery for over 20 years, retiring in 1986.

She was a loving woman of faith and a member of the former Blessed Sacrament Church, Hughestown, now, Our Lady of the Eucharist Parish, Pittston.

She enjoyed attending the Red Baron’s Baseball games with her brother, Leo where she was a 10 year season ticket holder. She was a member of the Red Baron’s Baseball Booster Club.

She was the matriarch of the Murphy Family, preceded in death by her husband, Charles J. Adonizio on December 20, 1995; infant son, Charles Adonizio Jr in 1957; brothers, Leo F. Murphy; Walter T. Murphy; and Francis J. Murphy; sister, Margaret A. Briney.

Surviving are Mary’s primary caregivers and nieces/nephews, Anne Sharkey, Moosic; Joseph A. Murphy, Dunmore; Connie Myefski, Duryea; and John Poli, Hughestown; brother-in-law, Rev Joseph J. Adonizio, Hughestown; and sister in law, Catherine (Orzello) Pesotine, Duryea; also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews on the Murphy, Adonizio and Pesotine sides of the family.

Mary’s family would like to thank Dr. Martin Moran and the staff at Wesley Village for the care and concern given to Mary.

Funeral services will be Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 9:15am from the Peter J. Adonizio Funeral Home, 251 William Street, Pittston with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Our Lady of the Eucharist Parish, 535 N. Main Street, Pittston celebrated by her brother-in-law, Rev. Joseph J. Adonizio. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Carverton. Friends may call Wednesday, February 10, 2016 from 4pm-7pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of the Eucharist Parish.
