Dr. Daniel L. Son


Dr. Daniel L. Son, 68, of Mountaintop, passed away Monday, November 26, 2018. Born in Wilkes-Barre on June 22, 1950, he was the son of the late Angelo and Mary (Medico) Son.

He was a graduate of Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School, class of 1968; he received his Bachelor of Science degree from Wilkes College and his medical degree from the University of Guadalajara.

Dr. Son completed his internship at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital and residencies in general surgery and urological surgery at Hahnemann Medical College, Philadelphia, PA. He began his surgical career in the private sector at Hahnemann University Hospital. He served as a senior instructor of urology from 1983 to the present.

From 1985 to 1997, Dr. Son practiced urology in Kingston, PA with his brother Dr. Kenneth Son. Most recently, Dr. Son was affiliated with the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance and was a sole practitioner in the Hazleton/Drums area.

He was certified by the American Board of Urology since 1986 and was a fellow with the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.) since 1980. Dr. Son was the recipient of many awards, completed many research projects, published numerous articles and presented cutting-edge techniques for the advancement of urological research.

Throughout Dr. Son’s career, he served in various capacities within the Hazleton/St. Joseph Medical Center and most notably was the Chairman and Chief of Surgery. He additionally practiced at Nesbitt Memorial Hospital, Gnaden Huetton Hospital, Hazleton General Hospital, Greater Hazleton Health Alliance, Lehigh Valley Hospital and the Blue Mountain Health System.

He was a member of UNICO, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and various outdoor recreation and conservation groups. He was a member of Fox Hill Country Club, Valley Country Club and the Appletree Sportsman’s Club. He was an avid and skilled outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, golfing, fishing, skiing and camping.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his second wife Susan (Menchi) Son.

Surviving are his four children from his former marriage with Joyce Pupa Hoban: daughter Alicia Roback and her husband Jeffrey, Shavertown, PA; sons Daniel and his wife Sara, Dundee, Oregon; Michael and his wife Thisbeth, Vicenza, Italy; and Patrick and his fiancé Tracy Clothier, Harveys Lake, PA; grandchildren, Olivia and Isabella Roback, Sadie Son, Sofia Son and Joseph Son; brother, Dr. Kenneth Son and his wife Josie, Fernandina Beach, Florida; fiancé Paula M. Triano, Mountaintop, PA; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 9:30 am in St. Joseph Marello Parish, 237 William Street, Pittston. Those attending are asked to go directly to the church on Saturday morning. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call Friday, November 30, 2018 from 5pm-8pm at Adonizio Funeral Home, LLC, 251 William Street, Pittston. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the National Rifle Association.
