Jean Ann Granteed, 81, of Hughestown, passed away Saturday, January 12, 2019 in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Born in Pittston on January 18, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Catherine (Gordon) Melvin.
Jean was a graduate of Pittston High School. In her earlier years, she worked in the local garment industry and as a retail clerk at Allen’s Shoes, Pittston. She, along with her husband, her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Matthew and Mary Granteed, operated Granteed’s Tavern, Parsonage Street, Hughestown, still in operation today.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, Pittston.
She dedicated her life to caring for her husband’s parents, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family. Jean was blessed with a beautiful singing voice and sang at many weddings and funerals. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be truly missed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Thomas and John Melvin.
Surviving are her husband of 63 years Samuel Michael Granteed; daughter, Mary Virginia and her husband Honorable Joseph M. Augello, Pittston; sons, Sam Granteed, Hughestown; and Gary Granteed and his wife Camilla, Plains; 12 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at 9am from Adonizio Funeral Home, LLC, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am in St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 William Street, Pittston. Interment will follow in West Pittston Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday, January 15, 2019 from 5pm-8pm at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Care and Concern Ministries of St. John the Evangelist Church or to the Memorial Pittston Library Children’s Wing.
