Carmella Ann (Paglianite) Glasgow, 92, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2026 at Northwestern Kishwaukee Hospital surrounded by her family. The matriarch of her family, she was strong, devoted, and fiercely loyal, and she loved life. She will be profoundly missed by all who loved her.

Carmella was born on December 21, 1933, in Pittston, Pennsylvania, one of five children of Italian immigrants. Her father, Gregorio, worked in the Pennsylvania coal mines and died of black lung disease. Her mother, Anna, was a seamstress and ran a small grocery store with the family. They lived surrounded by extended relatives, and Carmella grew up with a strong sense of sharing, love, and support.

She trained at Pittston Hospital School of Nursing and became a nurse, moving to northern New Jersey to work. There she met James "Jim" Glasgow, and the two fell in love and married. They settled in Kearny, New Jersey, where they had three sons. The family later moved back to Pittston, where Carmella lived within a few blocks of her mother and siblings. Their children grew up in the warmth of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and an endless number of cousins.

Carmella worked at Geisinger Medical Center for several decades, in many departments, finishing her career in vascular and general surgery. In 1992 she retired and she and Jim moved to Philadelphia to help their son Steven and his wife, Michele, raise their family. In 1994, they moved with Steven and Michele to DeKalb, Illinois, where Carmella lived for the next 32 years.

Family was always at the center of her life. She traveled to Italy and Scotland to visit relatives, and she stayed close to her extended family no matter how far she was from her birthplace. She spoke almost daily with her niece Rose Ann and often with her sister-in-law, Carole, and her many nieces and nephews. She was also a loyal friend to the people of her Pittston years. And she loved to shop, which anyone who knew her will tell you with a smile.

Carmella is survived by her husband of 72 years, Jim; her sons Steven, (Michele) and James Jr (Patty) and grandchildren Graham, Ryan, Jordan, Justin, Anna, JT, Baelee, and Julian; and eight great-grandchildren, Kallie, Nolan, Charlie, Davis, Blair, Alaska, Francis, and Beckett. She is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gregorio (Billy) and Anna; her brothers Dominic, Frankie, and Sammy; her sister Kathryn (Keenie), her son Christopher, and her grandson Christopher.

Everyone who knew Carmella felt her big personality. She loved completely and with unmatched spirit and passion. She will be watching over us all.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mt. Carmel Church Pittston, PA; Saint Mary Catholic Church DeKalb, IL; Newman Catholic Student Center-NIU DeKalb, IL.
