Cheryl Pauline Ackerman, 76, of Forty Fort, passed away Thursday July 17, 2025 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. She was a pillar of strength and fearlessness as she fought her courageous battle with cancer and every illness that came along with it.

Born in Pittston on September 9, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Frank DeVergilio and Antoinette Colechio DeVergilio. She was a 1966 graduate of Pittston Area High School.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck Ackerman.


Cheryl will be deeply missed by her daughter, Amy Deice; granddaughter, Nina Carey and Nina’s father, Scott Carey. As well as her sister, Irene Petroziello (Carl), Buffalo, NY; her aunt Catherine Havrilla, formally of Exeter, PA; nephews Carl Petroziello (Heather) and Michael Petroziello (Lauren), Buffalo, NY and numerous cousins.


She dedicated her life and world, with unconditional love, to her daughter Amy and beloved granddaughter Nina Lynn. The close relationship, strong bond and love that the three generations shared was immeasurable.


She was an active member of the Second Presbyterian Church, Pittston, PA.


For many years Cheryl worked at Pier 1 Imports in Wilkes-Barre, where she enjoyed taking care of all of her customers.


In accordance with her wishes, there will be no funeral services at this time. A celebration of her life will be announced at a later date.

Cheryl (Cherry to us growing up) always greeted you with her infectious smile and BIG heart. I always admired that she loved her immediate and extended family, and was so very kind to my parents Jim and Lucy. May she rest in peace now and know she will always remain in our heart.
