Genevieve Benson Ardo

Genevieve Benson Ardo, 92, formerly of Pittston Township passed away Thursday, September 21, 2023 in Wesley Village- Partridge Tippett Nursing Home.

Born in Wilkes-Barre on July 1, 1931 she was the daughter of the late John and Catherine Stancavage Benson.


She was educated in Wilkes-Barre schools and attended Coughlin High School.


In her earlier years she was employed in the local Cigar Industry and retired from Lady Carol as a quality control examiner.


Genevieve was a devout catholic, never without a rosary in her hands, and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Joseph Marello Parish in Pittston.


She will be lovingly remembered as a wonderful and kind wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.


Well known for her cooking and baking skills, her meatballs and pies were famous. She created her delicious dishes without a measuring cup or spoon! Everything always came out perfect in her kitchen.


In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years – James “Jake” Ardo, in 2001, her brother James Benson, sisters; Catherine Otloski and Dorothy Teller, and son-in-law Barry Barosky.


Surviving are sisters Florence Check and Ruth Brannigan, and brother John Benson and his wife Ann Marie Benson, all of Wilkes Barre. Left to treasure her memory are her children; Mary Witkowski and her husband Carl, Duryea; James Ardo and companion Kelly Mariani, Exeter; Helen Barosky, Pittston Township; Linda Ardo, Pittston Township; Jeanne Berlew and companion Bob Steininger, Wilkes-Barre; and Grandchildren; Carl Witkowski, Eric Witkowski, James Ardo, Jordan Dahlheimer, Barry Barosky, Jeffrey Pisanchyn, Joseph Pisanchyn, and Craig Berlew; Great-grandchildren Annabelle, Juliette, James, Madeline and Eric Witkowski, and Aiden, Lily, and Beau Dahlheimer, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wesley Village or the donor’s charity of choice.


Genevieve’s family will receive friends and relatives Wednesday, September 27, 2023 from 4PM-8PM at Adonizio Funeral Home, LLC, 251 William Street, Pittston. A mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 9:30AM in St. Joseph Marello Parish 237 William Street, Pittston, by Reverend Paul A. McDonnell O.S.J. Those wishing to attend are asked to go directly to the church. Internment will follow in St. Rocco’s Cemetery, Pittston Township.


The family would like to express their appreciation for the kind and loving care provided by the staff of Wesley Village and Hospice of the Sacred Heart.
