John Steven “Jack” Szeghy

John Steven “Jack” Szeghy, 78, of Southington, CT and formerly of Exeter, passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at the Hospital of Central Connecticut at New Britain surrounded by his loving family.

He was born and raised in Cleveland, OH, the son of the late John A. Szeghy and Mary (Timko) Szeghy. He graduated from John Carrol University and led a successful career in business with IBM until his retirement. There, he met his wife Elizabeth “Beth” Burke Szeghy in 1968, the love of his life, that left them virtually inseparable until her passing in 2020.

After marrying Beth in 1970, they raised their son John T. Szeghy, the first grandchild born of his generation in the Szeghy and Burke families. Always a dapper gentleman, Jack ensured Beth and John wanted for nothing, living out a faith-filled life dedicated to serving others. Jack’s charm and warmth spread to all those he encountered. He always had time for a meaningful conversation that recognized the value of every encounter, no matter how incidental.

During the past nineteen years, Jack cherished spending time with his three grandchildren, Jack, Rose and Grace Szeghy born to Jack and Beth’s son John and his wife Tracy. News of their many talents, interests and accomplishments filled Jack with pride and joy and were the subject of every conversation. Proud grandparents, Jack and Beth journeyed from Northeastern Pennsylvania to CT to visit at their Southington, Connecticut home. After Beth’s passing, Jack most recently established a residence in Connecticut to be closer to John and his family. Together, they relished trips to the beach in Avalon, NJ and Disneyworld, Orlando, Florida.

The foundation of Jack and Beth’s life together was their faith. As members of their parish community of St. Ignatius in Yardley, Pa. for many years and more recently at the Corpus Christi Parish West Pittston, they served as Eucharistic Ministers and participated in countless other church ministries. Jack was overjoyed to have the opportunity to bring Eucharist and good cheer to anyone homebound. He described this ministry as important and grace-filled.

In addition to John and Tracy, Jack, Rose and Grace, Jack is survived by his brother Richard Szeghy and wife Cathy, of Solon, OH, Beth’s five brothers and sisters, Hon. Thomas F. Burke, Jr. and wife Peggy, West Pittston, Patricia Forr and her husband R. Thomas, Altoona, Kathryn B. Corgan and her husband Michael A., Kingston, Margaret M. Burke, West Pittston, and Atty. Joseph D. Burke and his wife Atty. Kathleen, West Pittston; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend funeral services for Jack, on Saturday, July 1, 2023, from 9am-10am in Corpus Christi Parish, Immaculate Conception Church, 605 Luzerne Avenue, West Pittston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am.A graveside service will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 612, Mt Olivet Rd, Wyoming, PA.
