Marie Solano died peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 10, 2024. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt. Marie will be remembered for her endless elegance, both in appearance and manner, and for her gentle kindness. Marie's family was most important in her life, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Those who remain are comforted by her steadfast belief that she is now reunited with her beloved husband Pat.
Born in Pittston on May 31, 1930, Marie was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Ardo Nocito. A lifelong resident of Pittston Township, Marie grew up in Cork Lane and was the salutatorian of her graduating class at Pittston Township High School. In 1954, Marie married Patrick J. Solano, and the two started a family.
Marie and Pat had six daughters who filled their home with energy, laughter, and joy. Marie poured her whole heart into taking care of Pat and "the girls," and later extended her endless love and affection to her dear sons-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who were lucky enough to be invited to "Gram's."
Marie's kitchen was the center of her family's life, and it was always open as the go-to place for “a snitch” – usually fried meatballs, egg burgers, or late-night tea and toast. Most impressively, Marie cooked weekly Sunday dinners for twenty or more family members and guests. She was always worried there wasn’t enough food and would often fry a little extra sausage minutes before dinner – just in case – but no one ever left hungry. It was the best meal everyone had all week.
When she wasn't in the kitchen, Marie enjoyed spending time under the cabana, watching the family swim. Through three generations, down to her great-grandchildren who lovingly and ironically called her "Big Gram," nothing made her happier than a poolside crowd to check on and convince to stay for supper. She never learned to swim herself, but the pool was also the perfect place to walk laps and say her daily prayers.
Aside from her family, Marie’s faith was a central part of her life. A devout Catholic, she was a dedicated member of St. Joseph Marello Parish (formerly Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church), where she served as a catechist for many years. She was also an active member and supporter of the parish’s Altar and Rosary Society. In recent years, Marie made sure to watch the broadcast of the noontime mass from St. Peter’s Cathedral each day, and she was seldom seen without her grandmother’s brown wooden rosary beads in hand.
In addition to her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Patrick Solano, and brother, James Nocito. She is survived by her brothers, Michael Nocito and Frank Nocito and wife, Janice; her daughters, Mary Pat Augello and husband, Michael; Cathy Solano; Anita Bubul and husband, Thomas; Rita Zarra and husband, James; Liz Blaskiewicz and husband, Thomas; and Anne Branley and husband, Michael; eleven grandchildren, their spouses and partners; four great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and her dog, Chip.
The Solano family would like to thank the nurses from Hospice of the Sacred Heart, especially Shannon, Kristie, and Karen, for the exceptional care they provided. The family also extends its gratitude to Dr. Michalene Torbik and loving friend, Leah Diaz.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive, Wilkes-Barre or St. Joseph Marello Parish, 237 William St., Pittston.
A private viewing will be held at the convenience of the family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 am on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at St. Joseph Marello Parish. Those who plan to attend are asked to go directly to the church. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton. Arrangements are entrusted to Adonizio Funeral Home LLC, 251 William St., Pittston.
