Marilyn Loiacono Monahan

Marilyn Loiacono Monahan, 93, formerly of Dupont, passed away Saturday, December 30, 2023.  She was the widow of the late John E. Monahan, who preceded her in death in 1979.


Born in Pittston, she was the daughter of the late Rosario and Theresa Christiano Loiacono.  She was a member of Queen of Apostles Church, Avoca.  

 

She was a graduate of Pittston High School, 1948 and Wyoming Seminary Dean School of Business, 1949.  She was Co-Owner of her family business, the Red Mill Tavern, with her brother Fred Loiacono.  She was employed at Wilkes Barre General Hospital until her retirement in 1995.

 

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her three brothers, Joseph, 2006, Peter, 1980, and Fred, 1998, sister, Margaret Ostrosky, 2018, and nephew, David Loiacono, 2021.

 

Marilyn is survived by her four children.  John and wife Victoria Van Valen, Madison Township; Catherine (Cathy) Serino and husband Jim, Old Forge; Eugene (Gene) and wife Elizabeth Mitchell, Wyoming; and Marilyn Muzyk and husband Michael, Langhorne.  Two granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Kelsey Monahan; two grandsons, Michael and Zachary Muzyk.  Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. 

 

She resided at United Methodist Homes (Wesley Village) for two years and presently was residing with her son John and daughter-in-law, Victoria, Madison Township.

 

She served as President of the Ben Franklin PTA and also President of St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society.

 

Marilyn was a devoted Mother, Grandmother, Aunt and friend.  Always proud of her Italian heritage, she was an avid Penn State fan and enjoyed watching football and enjoyed life to its fullest.  She was considered a second mother to many while residing on Lidy’s Road, Dupont, through the years.   She enjoyed cooking, baking and learning new recipes.  She had a smile that would light up a room and enjoyed striking up a conversation with anyone she would meet.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

 

The family would like to thank Dr. Mauer Biscotti and medical staff for the care she received throughout the years.

 

The family will receive friends and relatives Thursday, January 4, 2024 from 4pm-7pm, in Adonizio Funeral Home, LLC, 251 William Street, Pittston.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, January 5, 2024 at 10:30am in Queen of the Apostles Parish, 715 Hawthorne Street, Avoca.  Those attending are asked to go directly to the church.  Interment, Denison Cemetery, Swoyersville.
