Samuel Michael Granteed

Samuel Michael Granteed, 87, of Hughestown, passed away Saturday, April 24, 2021, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Hughestown on March 5, 1934, he was the son of the late Matthew and Mary Capitano Granteed.


He was a graduate of Hughestown High School. Sam had played with the Washington Senators Minor League Baseball until illness forced him to retire. He was an avid sports fan and loved Notre Dame Football, the NY Yankees, and the NY Giants. He was a proud member of the Pittston Red Devils Baseball Team. He enjoyed following his children and grandchildren in all of their activities and sports endeavors.


He along with his parents and wife operated Granteed’s Tavern, Parsonage Street, Hughestown which is still family owned and operated today.


He retired from the Maintenance Department of Pittston Area School District.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Jean Ann Melvin Granteed and brother, Joseph Granteed, Sr.


Surviving are his children, Mary Virginia and her husband Honorable Joseph M. Augello, Pittston; Sam Granteed, Hughestown; and Gary Granteed and his wife Camilla, Plains; 12 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Carmella Dalton, Syracuse, NY; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A walk through visitation will be held Tuesday, April 27, 2021 from 6:30pm-8pm in Adonizio Funeral Home, LLC, 251 William Street, Pittston following CDC guidelines of wearing a face covering and maintaining social distance. Mass of Christian Burial and Interment will be private.
