Joseph P. Walsh

Joseph P. Walsh, 94, of Pittston died Tuesday, September 17, 2024 in Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit, Dunmore. 


He was born on March 1, 1930 in Pittston and was the son of the late Joseph and Helen Kelly Walsh.  He graduated from St. John the Evangelist High School, Pittston in 1947 and attended Seton Hall Prep in South Orange, New Jersey.

 

On April 7, 1951, he married Marie Therese Glenn, whom he met in grade school.  They settled in Pittston where he was owner and operator of Walsh Brothers, Mechanical Contractors, in Pittston.  He retired in 1986.

 

He was a former member of the U.S. Naval Reserves, Division 4-56 Kingston.  He was a former President and member of the Pittston Kiwanis Club for 62 years.  He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Miners Savings Bank, Pittston and later served on the Advisory Board of the former First Eastern Bank, Wilkes-Barre.

 

Mr. Walsh was a former member and past President of the Mechanical Contractors Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania.  He was a former member of the Pipefitter Local 524 Scranton.  He was a past Board Member of the Pittston Area Industrial Development.  He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 372, and also a member of the J.F.K. Fourth Degree Assembly 948.  He was a member of Fox Hill Country Club, he was also a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Pittston. 

An avid traveler, he enjoyed fishing trips to Alaska, Canada, and Norway.  After his retirement, his interests included watching sporting events, cruising, and playing cards.

 

Joseph will be remembered as a loving husband, caring father, father-in-law and grandfather, devoted brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and dear friend.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years, Marie Therese Glenn Walsh, and sisters Helen McClain and Jean Walsh.

 

Surviving are daughters, Ellen Manion and her husband, Dr. Thomas Manion, Edgewater, MD and Clare Weir and her husband, Richard Weir, Pittston; grandchildren, Anthony J. Usavage (Samantha), Kevin and Matthew Manion, and Ricky Weir (Renee); great-grandchildren, Vivienne and Anna Usavage; sisters, Sr. Ann Marie Walsh, S.C., Bronx, NY; Joan Brennan, Newtown, PA; and Mary Theresa Obzansky, Somerville, NJ.  He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends and relatives Monday, September 23, 2024 from 3pm-6pm in Adonizio Funeral Home, LLC, 251 William street, Pittston.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 10am in St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 William Street, Pittston.  Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church.  Interment, Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton.  Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
